Theodosia KonstantinidiTHEODOSIA KONSTANTINIDI University of Cyprus, Early Stage Researcher Comments:

"The aim of this workshop was to give ESR's technical knowledge on databases and statistical programs.  I found this workshop useful and educative.  Since it was the first workshop I attended, I got the opportunity to meet people of the INTACCT network and the Tilburg team, which is what I enjoyed most from this event."

Day 1: Databases intro, data collection and starting with SAS

  • Introduction (C. Beuselinck)
  • Database introduction (C. Beuselinck, B. Garcia, S. Hollander and P. Joos)                        Paulo Alves
  • SAS introduction (P. Alves)

  • Hands-on training (P. Joos/C. Beuselinck) -Philip Joos Replication and extension of the Collins et al. (1997) study

URSA KOSI University of Macedonia, Early Stage Researcher Comments:

"This INTACCT event was supposed to give us an overview of databases most frequently used in accounting research and also point out the potential limitations.  Additionally, we were able to get a short presentation of statistical packages used and see a few simple applications.  Such information is very important once less experienced researchers start implementing their ideas.

All of the presenters were talking from their own rich experience, giving helpful hints and insights.  They were also open to questions and discussing more detailed issues with individual researchers.Ursa Kosi

I found it extremely useful to get such a broad overview of various databases available for research.  I particularly enjoyed the practical examples of accessing various databases and getting familiar with their potential limitations discovered by researchers with lots of experiences.  I attended this event as a participant."

Day 2: Event studies and database problems

  • Event studies: methodology and (data bases related) issues (I. Karamanou)
  • Problems associated with databases (P. Alves and B. Garcia)

Zoltan Novotny-FarkasZOLTAN NOVOTNY-FARKAS University of Frankfurt, Early Stage Researcher Comments:

"From this event, I had hoped to learn the basics of the usage of statistical packages and how to do data management.  I became familiar with STATA and SAS and was able to deal with large datasets and associated data issues.

I most enjoyed attending the event due to the professional way of teaching using modert IT techniques.  I attended this event as a student."

Day 3: Stata and Panel data estimation techniques

  • Stata : an introduction (D. Christodoulou)
  • Panel data methodology with an application (D. Christodoulou)Stuart McLeay
  • Short panels with an application (S. McLeay)
